his book is the combination of two-decades of experience teaching about anti-racism, and over a decade working in and with schools. Freedom Teaching is about taking deliberate actions that liberate students in their education. Freedom teaching is about creating schools and classrooms in which students learn free of institutional barriers and in environments that value their cultural wealth.
WHY I WROTE FREEDOM TEACHING
I tried my best to write the book that I needed when I was still in the classroom. A book that breaks down what it means to be an anti-racist practitioner while providing true and practical scenarios for applying the skills that I was so desperately trying to master.
Most importantly I wrote this book for every student that I taught. I wish I knew then the things that I know now and what I share in this book.
Truthfully writing this book is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, during one of the hardest years of my life.
